Environment Minister Moves
to Phase Out Use of Lead Sinkers and
Jigs in Fishing

CANADA

In Canada, the use of lead fishing sinkers and jigs weighing less than 50 grams is prohibited while fishing in national wildlife areas and national parks.

UNITED STATES
The United States Fish and Wildlife Service has banned the use of lead fishing sinkers and jigs weighing less than 1 ounce in several National Wildlife Refuges and some National Parks.

U.K.
Britain prohibited use of lead fishing sinkers between 0.6 and 28.3 grams (1 ounce) beginning in 1987 to protect swans and other waterbirds from lead poisoning resulting from ingestion of lead sinkers.
